25 Sep New Starter: Becky, Our New Recruitment Administrator
We spoke to new starter, Becky about her role as a Recruitment Administrator at AKA Recruitment.
Can you tell us a little bit about you, outside of work?
I’m interested in being outside, going for walks and going to different places. If I go to new cities or new countries I love to go look around castles and old buildings. I can’t just sit inside, I’ve got to do something!
Tell us an interesting fact about you.
I attended an awards evening with Leeds united. Quite a few of the main players were there and it led to celebration food and drinks with them. I was able to speak to Jesse Marsch and Stuart Dallas! And obviously get a picture with them. That’s my claim to fame.
Are you a tea or a coffee drinker?
Coffee in the morning (preferably lattes) and tea in the afternoon.
Cats or dogs?
Dogs – I’m petrified of cats. They’re unpredictable!
What’s your favourite time of day?
I prefer evenings. Last night we went to Pugneys Country Park and it wasn’t too cold or too warm and me and my husband had a lovely walk.
My husband is definitely not a morning person! I like to make the most of the day though.
What three things can you not live without?
- Eastenders – I’ve watched it since I was ten years old and I’ve never missed an episode! I don’t think I could live without it.
- My dog – dogs relieve a lot of stress and make you happy. My dog Ava is a nine year old golden retriever but she still thinks she’s a puppy and tries to squeeze in gaps she can’t fit in!
- Coffee – I need it in the morning or there’s no point talking to me!
What is your favourite book?
The BFG – I love the funny words in it!
If you were an animal, what animal would you be?
I’d be a giraffe. They’re my favourite animal, they look so clumsy! I’d like to be one because their necks are so long I’d be able to see over everyone and what everyone’s getting up to!
Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
To start with I’m not very out there, I hold back but once I get to know people I’m a completely different person.
Are you an optimist or a pessimist?
I actually had this conversation with my partner the other day! He says I’m a pessimist – I’m a bit of a worrier but he can always talk me round.
What makes you unique?
People often say I’m too caring – I’ll listen to anyone, speak to anyone, and I think that’s rare now, people don’t want to chat anymore.
What inspires you?
I admire people who go towards what they aim for and live life to the fullest. One of the actors from Eastenders left to pursue a career in musical theatre; I really admire people like that who really enjoy life, that’s where I want to be.
Name three of your strengths.
- My chattiness – Once I get talking about something I’m passionate about, I won’t stop!
- My team skills – I can work on my own but I prefer to be in a team, communicating and helping each other out.
- I’m quite flexible – when things don’t work out how I planned them, I can adapt. At the moment I’m very flexible with the DIY in the house!
Name one of your weaknesses.
I’m probably a bit naive. Sometimes I take everything someone says as they say it and I think sometimes you should take things with a pinch of salt.
What job did you want to do growing up?
It was between an air hostess or a teacher. I got halfway to one! The only reason I left my airport job was because I didn’t have a car and shifts would start at 3am. I’d have to take a taxi into Leeds city centre and then a bus to the airport. I found the shifts quite difficult to adjust to.
If you didn’t work in recruitment, what industry would you work in?
I would go into the NHS and healthcare because it’s another industry where you’re helping people and that’s all I want to do.
What are your future goals?
My personal goals are to have a family and travel.
My professional goals are to find the right place for a lifelong career; somewhere with plenty of opportunities to take on different roles, somewhere with a happy environment, outgoing team members and just somewhere you can have fun while getting the job done.
What is a Recruitment Administrator? What will you be doing in your new role?
I will be contacting potential candidates for job roles that we’ve been assigned to find and keeping them updated on any interview dates.
What has your career journey been so far?
I used to work checking in passengers in the airport. People always think it’s a glamorous job but it was actually quite stressful; you’ve got to be very aware of security, double checking everything! Once, I was escorting passengers onto the plane when a lady’s hat blew off and I had to chase it down without running into the path of another plane!
I’ve worked in the travel industry and retail. Within retail I worked in different areas like homeware, food and sports retail. I’ve been in roles from Sales Assistant to Supervisor and seen a lot of positives and negatives of the industry.
What drew you to recruitment?
I wanted to help people to find jobs after my own experience. After the company I worked for became insolvent, I was looking for a new job for two months and there was a significant lack of communication. For example, when I was sent a broken link to the next stage of an application there was no phone number to call and my email was ignored. It was very frustrating so when an opportunity came up to help people in a similar situation, I took it.
Why did you want to join AKA Recruitment?
Initially, I liked the look of the website with all the team members on there. Then, when I interviewed with Ryan, Seon and Josh, the conversation was very easy, it wasn’t too formal and it just seemed like the right place to start in recruitment. It seemed as though, (hopefully!) I fit in here as well.
What are you most looking forward to in your first few weeks at AKA?
I’m looking forward to learning the new skills and terminology necessary to understand this new industry.
